Africans free to play in Spain
06-Oct-2007

African players will no longer be classed as non-European Union workers in Spain's Primera Liga following a new ruling by the Spanish Football Federation.

The RFEF made the ruling in accordance with the Cotonou Agreement, a treaty signed in Benin in 2000 by members of the EU and a group of 77 African, Caribbean and Pacific states (ACP).

The agreement stipulates that nationals from those countries working legal

ly in Europe should have the same rights as EU citizens.

In many European countries, football clubs are prevented from selecting more than three non-EU players in each match, but the RFEF's new ruling, which was made following consultation with Fifa and Uefa, means that will no longer be the case in La Liga.

"From now on players from these countries that play in Spain will be considered as coming from the European Union as will those that sign in the future," said RFEF spokesman Jorge Carretero.

Among the players affected by the RFEF's ruling are Barcelona duo Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon) and Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast), Real Madrid's Mahamadou Diarra (Mali) and Sevilla striker Arouna Kone (Ivory Coast).

  Hamburg in shock Addo swoop
09-Aug-2007

German club Hamburg have signed Ghana midfielder Otto Addo on a three-year contract.

The 33-year-old was on the verge of beginning his coaching career after being released by relegated club Mainz 05 at the end of last season.

Originally he joined Hamburg to play with their junior team in the German third division league and also to help the coaching staff.

However he impressed the coaches of the senior team so much that he has sign

ed a deal to play for the Uefa Cup campaigners.

¿We can confirm that Otto Addo has signed the deal to play for our senior team,¿ Hamburg spokesman Jorg Woerns told BBC Sport.

¿His highly impressive performances for the junior team is the reason why the coaches asked him to join the top team.¿

Addo, who has already played some friendly matches for Hamburg, is not surprised at the move and he is still keen on helping the junior team.

¿You will have to be prepared for everything as a professional,¿ said the 33-year-old.

¿I have also told the team that I am prepared to help the second team when I am needed. I am prepared for everything.

Addo's career has been dogged by a problem with his right knee, after suffering three cruciate ligament injuries since 2001.

Addo has not played for the Black Stars since the last year's World Cup in Germany.

But he is still eyeing a place in the team when the country hosts the African Cup of Nations next year.

Zambia Import Food for Congo Tie
30-Jan-2007

The Zambian under-20s side will eat meals prepared in DR Congo.
Za

mbian players will eat food prepared in DR Congo ahead of their African Youth Championship semi-final against hosts Congo on Tuesday.

Fearing 'dirty tricks', meals for the 18-man squad will be prepared at the Zambian embassy in Kinshasa, capital of the DR Congo, an official admitted.

"At this stage of the competition anything can happen, especially when you are playing the host nation for a place in the final," warned Zambian delegation leader Machacha Shepande.

"Dirty tricks" have been part of African football for decades with visiting national and club sides regularly subjected to a range of difficulties designed to disrupt preparations and lower morale.

Sub-standard food, no hot water and insect-infested rooms at hotels, no keys to open training facilities, and unnecessarily long trips in buses lacking air conditioning are some examples of previous tactics employed.

Defending champions Nigeria and Gambia, the only team boasting a 100% record in the pool phase, meet in the other semi-final in Brazzaville at the same time.

  FiFA U-20 World Cup
26-Jan-2007

Hosts Congo booked their place in June's Fifa U-20 World Cup after beating Burkina Faso 1-0 to reach the semi-finals of the African Youth Championship.

Before a packed stadium, the hosts took the lead shortly before half-time when striker Franchel Ibara converted a 43rd-minute penalty.

The spot-kick, dispatched low to the right-hand side of the goal, resulted from a foul on Chirel Ngakosso Ermejea and allowed the Congolese to finish second in Group A behind leaders Gambia.

Congo have made their first Fifa finals because any team reaching the semi-finals of the African Youth Championhip automatically qualify for June's event in Canada.

There were wild scenes in Brazzaville as the Red Devils held on in a tight contest, with the second half providing chances at both ends.

"I'm so satisfied for my boys who have made incredible improvements in two years," Congo coach Eddy Hudanski told BBC Sport.

"They were boys from the streets who've come a long way and now we have our reward - the secret was our desire."

Burkina Faso coach Sidiki Diarra was philosophical about his team's exit from the competition.

"We came with the ambition to qualify for the Fifa youth cup but this didn't happen," he told BBC Sport.

"This did not happen but it's not the end of the world. We'll continue to work."

In the day's other Group A game, Gambia maintained their fine form when beating Ivory Coast 1-0 in Pointe Noire.

Abdoulaye Kenmansally scored the only goal of the game after 84 minutes to ensure that Gambia finish top of the group with a 100 per cent record.

Gambia, many of whose players won the 2005 African U-17 championship, have taken nine points, scoring five goals and conceding none.

Meanwhile, Ivory Coast, who started the competition as group favourites, return home without registering either a goal or a point to their name.

Ghana: Can 2008 Will Be Classy-Rex

Kofi Owusu Aduonum<

/o:p>

EXACTLY 360 days from tomorrow, Ghana will be the centre of attraction as it hosts the 26th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations soccer fiesta.

And as part of preparation towards Africa's biggest sporting event, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) will set the tone with a year countdown ceremony at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra tomorrow. According to the Chief Operations Officer (C.O.O) of the LOC, Mr. Magnus Rex Danquah, the 26th edition of the Nations Cup will be a reference point for future soccer tournaments.

"We may not be as resourceful as Egypt, but we have put the necessary structures in place to ensure that participating countries will leave the shores of Ghana impressed with the organization of the competition," he said at the LOC secretariat.

Mr. Danquah's optimism for a successful tourney stems from his outfit's series of pilot studies it has embarked on and a critical study at the organizational strategies of Egypt 2006 as well as the Germany 2006 World Cup."

He added, "We identified some loopholes in the organizational programme of the Egypt competition, and have therefore armed ourselves to escape similar setbacks in Ghana 2008."

"We know that our success in the organization of the forthcoming tournament will attract Angola and South Africa to tap technical know from Ghana as they host the 2010 Cup of Nations and the World Cup tournaments respectively," he emphasized.

The Deputy C.O.O. of the LOC, Mr. Andy Sam stated that: "We are driven by the legacy aspect of the project, and not only the hosting of the tournament."

"After the competition, the facilities will be available and we are looking at how beneficial it will be for the country," he noted.

  Portsmouth complete Lauren deal
19-Jan-2007

Portsmouth have signed Arsenal defender Lauren on a two-and-a-half year deal.

The Cameroon player, who turns 30 on Friday, has joined for an undisclosed fee following six-and-a-half years at the Gunners.

"Lauren is an outstanding player. He is a gre

at athlete and professional, very strong and quick, too," Pompey boss Harry Redknapp told the club website.

"I'm delighted he's decided to join us over a whole host of clubs that were after him."

Lauren, who missed the whole of 2006 after knee surgery, had not played for Arsenal this season.

The versatile player fell down the pecking order this campaign, with Emmanuel Eboue and Justin Hoyte picked ahead of him in the first-team reckoning.

He joined Arsenal for £7.2m from Mallorca in 2000 and made 241 appearances for the north London side.

Lauren added: "This is a great move for me.

"Portsmouth are having a great season and are pushing for a place in Europe and I aim to be playing my part in that challenge.

"I have been very impressed with the club's plans for the future, both on and off the pitch, and this was why I chose to come to Fratton Park.

"It will also be good to once again to team up with former Arsenal team-mates Sol Campbell and Kanu."

Portsmouth's new signing will go straight into the squad to face Charlton on Saturday.

  Ali's Quotes
17-Jan-2007

Muhammad Ali has entertained the world for more than 40 years with his legendary on

e-liners, witticisms and diatribes.

Here BBC Sport rounds up some of the things he has said during his lifetime in and out of the ring.

If we've missed any, make sure you tell us using the 606 link at the bottom of this page (Web users only, WAP phone readers will not see link).

ON BEING THE GREATEST

I'm not the greatest; I'm the double greatest. Not only do I knock 'em out, I pick the round.

It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up.

Floats like a butterfly, sting like a bee, his hands can't hit what his eyes can't see.
Before the 1974 fight against George Foreman

I done wrestled with an alligator, I done tussled with a whale; handcuffed lightning, thrown thunder in jail; only last week, I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalised a brick; I'm so mean I make medicine sick.
Again, before the 1974 Foreman fight

I'm so fast that last night I turned off the light switch in my hotel room and got into bed before the room was dark.
Yet more '74 pre-fight build-up ahead of facing Foreman

The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.

Superman don't need no seatbelt.

When you can whip any man in the world, you never know peace.

I'm the best. I just haven't played yet.
On playing golf

ON BOXING

Boxing is a lot of white men watching two black men beat each other up.

Champions aren't made in gyms, champions are made from something they have deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.

Only the nose knows where the nose goes when the doors close.

I never thought of losing, but now that it's happened, the only thing is to do it right. That's my obligation to all the people who believe in me. We all have to take defeats in life.
After losing to Ken Norton, 31 March 1973

ON RACE, RELIGION AND LIFE

I am America. I am the part you won't recognise. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me.

Cassius Clay is a slave name. I didn't choose it and I don't want it. I am Muhammad Ali, a free name - it means beloved of God - and I insist people use it when people speak to me and of me.
Announcing his conversion to the Muslim faith after first Sonny Liston fight

"What's my name, fool? What's my name?"
To Ernie Terrell during their 1967 fight - Terrell had refused to call him Muhammad Ali

I know I got it made while the masses of black people are catchin' hell, but as long as they ain't free, I ain't free.

Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs?

I got nothing against no Viet Cong. No Vietnamese ever called me a 'nigger'.

Nobody has to tell me that this is a serious business. I'm not fighting one man. I'm fighting a lot of men, showing a lot of 'em, here is one man they couldn't defeat, couldn't conquer. My mission is to bring freedom to 30m black people.
Before his fight against Jerry Quarry in 1970.

A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.

What's really hurting me - the name Islam is involved, and Muslim is involved and causing trouble and starting hate and violence. Islam is not a killer religion, Islam means peace. I couldn't just sit home and watch people label Muslims as the reason for this problem.
21 September 2001, in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks

ALI vs FRAZIER

Frazier is so ugly that he should donate his face to the US Bureau of Wildlife.
Ali

It will be a killer, and a chiller, and a thriller, when I get the gorilla in Manila
Ali, before the "Thrilla in Manila" against Frazier

Joe Frazier is so ugly that when he cries, the tears turn around and go down the back of his head.
Ali

I always bring out the best in men I fight, but Joe Frazier, I'll tell the world right now, brings out the best in me. I'm gonna tell ya, that's one helluva man, and God bless him.
Ali, after the "Thrilla in Manila"

I said a lot of things in the heat of the moment that I shouldn't have said. Called him names I shouldn't have called him. I apologise for that. I'm sorry. It was all meant to promote the fight.
Ali

The Butterfly and me have been through some ups and downs and there have been lots of emotions, many of them bad. But I have forgiven him. I had to. You cannot hold out for ever. There were bruises in my heart because of the words he used. I spent years dreaming about him and wanting to hurt him. But you have got to throw that stick out of the window. Do not forget that we needed each other, to produce some of the greatest fights of all time.
Frazier in reflective mood.

ON OTHER OPPONENTS

Hey Floyd - I seen you! Someday I'm gonna whup you! Don't you forget, I am the greatest!
To then-world heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson during the 1960 Olympic Games.

Why, Chump, I bet you scare yourself to death just starin' in the mirror. You ugly bear! You ain't never fought nobody but tramps and has beens. You call yourself a world champion? You're too old and slow to be champion!
To Sonny Liston before their fight on 25 February 1964

I shook up the world! I shook up the world!
After beating Liston

Kenya refuses to take runner back

Kenya refuses to take runner back

Mushir Salem Jawher said he did not know he could not run in Israel

ODY>
Kenyan authorities say they will not give their nationality back to a top athlete who defected to Bahrain, before being stripped of his new citizenship.

Mushir Salem Jawher, born Leonard Mucheru, is now stateless after running a marathon in Israel, which Bahrain does not recognise.

He had used his Kenyan passport to enter Israel but this has been revoked.

Israeli media said Mr Jawher was the first athlete from an Arab country to compete in an Israeli marathon.

After learning that he had lost his Bahraini nationality, Mr Jawher told Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper that he was "shocked".

"I was never told it was illegal to enter Israel. I really don't know what to do."

Anger

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Bahrain Athletic Association said it had received news that a Bahraini national had competed in Israel with "shock and regret".

A committee of sport and government authorities decided to strike Mr Jawher's name off the sport union records and revoke his Bahraini nationality, the statement said.

It said Mr Jawher entered Israel with his Kenyan passport and that the runner had "violated the laws of Bahrain".

Kenya does not allow dual nationality and Mr Jawher was supposed to have given up his passport in 2003 when he defected to Bahrain.

Mr Jawher won the Tiberias marathon in just over two hours and 13 minutes.

He is one of several long-distance athletes to have moved from East Africa to the Gulf in recent years on lucrative contracts.

The defections have provoked anger in Kenya.

BBC sports reporter Alex Capstick says payment for the transfer in the form of new facilities in Kenya has been slow to materialise, and not all athletes who make the move receive the privileged lifestyle they expected.

  Decastel appointed Sfaxien coach
03-Jan-2007

Tunisian side CS Sfaxien have appointed Swiss coach Michel Decastel as their new manager.

Decastel returns to the Sfax club for his second spell after coaching the side in 2004.

He takes over from Mrad Mahjoub who quit last week.

Mahjoub's exit came just two months after their last-gasp defeat in the Champions League final.

The 2005 Tunisian champions are in crisis after president Slah Zahaf also confirmed he would be leaving

the club in June.

To add to the club's problems many players are refusing to train as they claim they have not been paid for several months.

Mahjoub steered Sfaxien to a surprise top place in their group, including ending the long-standing unbeaten record on Africa soil of Egypt giants Ahly.

The club then beat Orlando Pirates of South Africa in the semi-finals to set up another two matches against Ahly in the final.

They lost 2-1 on aggregate but only after the Egyptians scored a late winner in the second leg.

Sfaxien are in fifth place in the Tunisian league, seven points behind the leaders at the halfway point of the campaign.

Decastel has previous experience with Tunisian football, as he had managed Esperance in 2002.

  Eto Boost for Barcelona

Eto'o signed from Real Mallorca in 2004

Cameroon's Samuel Eto

'o is recovering from his right knee injury quicker than expected and should be back in training in mid-January.

The Barcelona striker wasn't expected to return until February after tearing and displacing the meniscus during a Champions League game at Werder Bremen on 27 September.

"Eto'o is improving faster than predicted. He is a great athlete," Barcelona doctor Ramon Cugat said on Saturday.

However, Cugat also urged caution.

"We shouldn't celebrate too early. The meniscus requires great respect," he added.

The Cameroon international, who hopes to play against Liverpool on 21 February and 6 March in the second round of the Champions League, has missed 19 of the European and Spanish champion's games.

Without him, Barcelona struggled in the Champions League and has dropped to second place behind Sevilla in the Spanish league.

Eto'o, who has been Africa's top player in the last three seasons and was nominated for this year's award, has scored 68 goals for Barcelona since arriving from Mallorca in 2004.

He had 26 last season to be the Spanish league's top scorer.

Barcelona has other injury concerns.

Forward Lionel Messi and defender Lilian Thuram are not expected back until February, while defender Gianluca Zambrotta should be playing again in late January.

Nigeria to play Ghana in London
Nigeria beat Ghana in 2006 African Cup of Nations
Ghana's Stephen Appiah tackles Nigeria's Christian Obodo
Nigeria will take on African arch-rivals Ghana in London in a friendly match planned for February 2007.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Sani Lulu, has announced: "The Eagles will play a friendly against Ghana on February 7.

"The game will be part of the Nigeria's build-up to the Nations Cup qualifier against Uganda in March."

At the 2006 African Nations Cup in Egypt Nigeria's Super Eagles beat the

Ghana Black Stars by a solitary goal.

A previous friendly involving the two teams was cancelled in August at the last minute after Nigeria coach Augustine Eguavoen said the timing was poor for his team.

A proposed friendly between Senegal and Nigeria in November was also cancelled due to complications over the signing of a contract between the two nation's FAs.

Lulu also disclosed that Togo and Morocco are interested in testing the might of the Super Eagles in friendly matches.

Nigeria lead Group 3 of the qualifying tournament for the 2008 Nations Cup to be staged in Ghana, with six points after two rounds of matches.

Uganda are two points adrift in a group that also includes Niger and Lesotho.

Ahly take Club World third place

Egyptian side Ahly

clinched third spot in the Club World Championship by beating Club America from Mexico 2-1.

African champions Ahly took the lead after 42 minutes from a free-kick by Mohamed Aboutrika.

Club America responded on the hour when Salvador Cabanas headed home Chauhtemoc Blanco's cross at the near post.

Aboutrika grabbed his second goal in the 79th minute after exchanging passes with Flavio and rifling a low shot past America goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Ahly finished last at the 2005 tournament but the Cairo side overcame Auckland City from New Zealand to book their place in this year's semi-finals - where they faced Internacional.

A late Luiz Adriano denied them a place in the final against Barcelona but goalscorer Aboutrika insisted his side were pleased to have finished third.

He said: "This is a good result for us.

"After finishing last a year ago, it was satisfying to score twice and help our team finish third."

Aboutrika's exploits enhanced his claim to become African player of the year.

The Egypt international is the only Africa-based player to be shortlisted, alongside Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Samuel Eto'o and Nwankwo Kanu.

Pompey keen to keep striker Kanu

Portsmouth say Kanu will not be sold in the January transfer window.

The 30-year-old, who has been linked with Dutch club Ajax, reportedly told a Nigerian radio station said: "If a better offer comes I will take it."

But striker Kanu is under contract until the end of the season and Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie said: "There's no chance of him leaving.

"Kanu is our player and he's tied up until the end of the season, with an option of an extension beyond that."

The Premier League's top scorer with nine goals, Kanu's career has been revitalised since joining Pompey from West Brom in the summer.

Storrie added: "He is playing very well for us and that is why you get this speculation, but I can't make it any clearer that he is our player and that's that."
